The very popular Aakash tablet project, which was launched by HRD minister Kapil Sibal is under some trouble. Aakash is dubbed as the world’s cheapest computer tablet, which could revolutionize the education system in India.
There are reports that the Letter of Credit issued to the company Datawind by the government many not be extended. The Letter of Credit enables Aakash tablet makers Datawind to receive money from the banks.
The bone of contention between the government and Datawind is the product testing criteria proposed by IIT Jodhpur. The test criteria include conditions like water resistance test on the Aakash tablet by putting it under water rain. Datawind has said that IIT proposed test specifications were not a part of the original tender and the tablet cannot be compared with other laptops at the present price tag.
IIT Jodhpur is the tendering authority for the Aakash project. Reports have suggested that the first batch of the tablets provided by the company has received poor feedback and many performance issues exist.
