Epilepsy is treatable

People are misled by myths about epilepsy. As a result they go for all kind of treatments which make real treatment of epilepsy more difficult, says Dr Sudhir Shah, Organising Chairman, ECON 2020. Announcing the programme details of ECON 2020, Prof. Dr Sudhir Shah, Organising Chairman, ECON 2020 said “As per the estimates around 10 million people have epilepsy in India, which is 1/6 of total epileptics in world. Gujarat has estimated 6 to 7 lakhs of epileptics. In more than ¾ of the patients, Epilepsy is treatable. Over the past few years, new developments in the diagnostic modalities and treatment have led to better control and patient care. ”

He further said “Viral Infection of brain and road traffic accidents are amongst most preventable causes of epilepsy. More than ¾ controlled with treatment and out of them half are totally cured at the end of three years.”

Prof. Dr Sudhir Shah said “Gujarat has very few epilepsy care centers compared to other advanced centers in the cities like Trivendrum, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The ECON 2020 will empower not only to neurophysicians aby also impart training to students, epileptologists, patients etc.”

“During ECON 2020,latest developments in epilepsy will be discussed like Neuromodulation, VNS, RNS, DBS, RFTC, Laser, Optical Coherence, TMS, Gene therapy, Stem cell therapy, Immune Therapy  etc”, Prof. Dr Shah added.

Dr Shalin Shah, Organising Secretary, ECON 2020 said “In ECON 2020, more than 400 neurologists from all over India have registered. Six international faculties and approximately 60 national faculties will deliver lecture on topics related to epilepsy, over these 3 days conference.”

“Under the aegis of this conference, Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) and Academy of Neurologists of Ahmedabad (ANA) is organizing an ‘Epilepsy awareness program’, on Sunday, for the epilepsy patients. Eminent neurologists will address issues of ignorance, myths, prejudices and social stigma related to this disorder” he added.

Dr Shalin Shah said “During ECON 2020, the Quiz, Entertainment programmes like Musical programme- Neuregama will also be organized.”
