Gujarat high court on Friday issued notice to the state government over the bail plea filed by PAtidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel in connection with the sedition charges.
Hardik moved the HC last week after a city sessions court denied bail to him. Hardik has sought bail from the HC by claiming that the charges of sedition and treason leveled against him were politically motivated. Hardik and his associates were charged of sedition and conspiracy to wage war against the state by the city crime branch following his speech and the violence that took place after the August 25 rally at the GMDC ground.
The lower court refused bail to Hardik on the ground that if he was released, he could repeat the offence and keeping him behind the bars would be in the larger interest of the people. The trial court also apprehended that if granted bail, Hardik could repeat the offence.
The state government has been maintaining that sever charges were slapped after Hardik and his associates’ activities led to large scale rioting across the state. Eight lives were lost, 27 citizens and 203 policemen were injured, 1,822 public properties were damaged. Justice AJ Deai has sought reply from the government by April 7.
