Gujarat to implement 10% EBC quota in medical-engineering colleges

Gujarat will give 10 percent reservation to economically backward class in medical colleges from this year. With this the number of seats in medical, para medical and related courses will increase from 31890 to 38699.

The decision was taken in the State Cabinet on Wednesday. Giving details, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that with 10 EBC reservation there will be 914 more seats in medical colleges in the state taking the total to 5264. In addition a new medical college in Amreli has been sanctioned and admission to 150 seats will be given from this year.

Similarly 220 seats will be increased in dental colleges taking the total seats to 1360. In ayurveda 335 seats will increase and total 2115 seats will be available. In homeopathy 635 seats will be added and the total number of seats will be 4160. In nursing 3735 seats will be increased taking the total number to 19,975. In physiotherapy 900 seats will be added and total 5435 seats will be available. In various para medical courses 70 seats will be added taking the total to 390, Patel said.

He said that with the implementation of EBC quota there would be no changed in existing reservation. There will be no reduction in 51 percent quota of reserved category, he clarified. For EBC quota there will be increase in seats by 22-to 25 percent in each college.

For implementation of this decision seats in colleges will be :- 65 seats of 41 percent general category, 15 seats of 10% EBC quota, 42 seats of 27% SEBC class, 24 seats of 15% ST, 11 seats of 7%SC and 28 seats of 15% All India Quota. Total 185 seats will be available in each college, he added.

Patel said that 10% EBC reservation would be available in engineering, pharmacy and other professional courses. There will be 38,607 more engineering seats, 1676 pharmacy seats and 4247 more seats in architecture, MBA, MCA and other professional courses and more than 44,000 seats will be available in these courses, he said.
