Manish Doshi is one of the most visible faces on Gujarati news channels. But there is lot to this student leader turned politician which is not visible or known in the two dimensional image of the TV screen.
He is a highly qualified professional with Phd in Instrumentation Control. Though, he completed his study years back, 40 year old is still very active in field of education quite unlike shouting brigade student leader.
He has great contribution in the field of education in the niche area of counseling and promotion of students’ merit. For the last nine years, he has been preparing student career guide for Congress. Two annual publications are “What after 10th” and “what after12th”.
What has made these publications popular is the fact that they are updated every year with new subjects and other admission related issues. Thus a student finds these publications very relevant.
Obviously, the day these publications area released students and parents make a beeline for them. For Congress these publications are great “connect youth” tools and the party very cleverly uses its infrastructure to distribute these booklets in the state.
It is a different story that these career must books have given Congress a channel to channelize youth, it has not been able to add to Congress vote bank. But this does not undermine genuine efforts of Manish Doshi in bringing out excellent career guide year after year.
In the media room of the GPCC, one can see students streaming to meet Manish Doshi alone or with their parents to get guidance from Manish Doshi. These inquiry seekers are from across party lines. Known names of BJP prefer to have tele counselling. But in person all have praise for Manish Doshi.
A low profile Manish Doshi is quick to point out that this is the idea the then PCC President Bharat Solanki had conceptualise and promoted. But the fact remains that it is Manish Doshi who pursued the idea with a missionary zeal. And today, the book with 50,000 plus copies is a hit.
Another similar youth connect project of Congress is Rajiv Gandhi Award Scheme- Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Uday Sanman”- in which 600 college meritorious students are given Award. Of these half are girls keeping the spirit of gender equality intact.
Even in this project visualize by the then PCC in-charge Arjun Modhwadia , it is the arduous and monotonous task of coordination of colleges and regular follow up which is done by Manish Doshi. This is the eighth year of these awards.
If these activities are one end of the educational activity of Manish Doshi, his role in Vice-Chancellor Search Committee is the other extreme. Here is no direct student connectivity. But here he plays important role in deciding the top-boss of the University, the Vice-Chancellor. He is candid enough to admit that the task is tricky as these appointments have political shades.
But a lot can be done as he did in the case of the search committee for Vice-Chancellor of South Gujarat University. He adopted a procedure which invited applications from all over the country and the committee indeed got applications from across India transcending specialization areas.
No doubt, selection was quite obviously a political outcome, the process adopted turned out a quite brand building exercise for university which became known all over the country through the online search for right candidate for the post of VC!
His father was a known teacher and principal of a government school in a small village of Surendranagar district- Mathak- and he grew up seeing teacher and a friend of student in his father. Probably those early days shaped him for this creative role of students’ friend, Manish Doshi.
