Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday flew down to Ahmedabad to appear before a metropolitan court in a defamation suit filed against him by the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and its chairman, Ajay Patel.
Rahul was welcomed by senior leaders of the state including State President Amit Chavda, Leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani and others. From the airport he rode down to a restaurant in Law Garden and had his lunch. He said he is thankful to his opponents in the RSS and the BJP for providing him with opportunities to take his ideological battle against them to the public.
In a tweet he said, “I’m in Ahmedabad today, to appear in another case filed against me by my political opponents in the RSS/BJP.I thank them for providing me these platforms & opportunities to take my ideological battle against them to the public.
The defamation suit alleges that Congress leaders, including Gandhi, had falsely claimed that the bank was involved in a “scam” to swap Rs 750 crore in scrapped notes with valid currency within five days of demonetisation in 2016.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Nirlai Munshi fixed the next hearing on September 6. Rahul had to take a bail and he furnished a bond of Rs.15,000. A statement from Rahul’s office said,’ Over 20 cases have been filed against him in various courts around India by RSS/ BJP workers to try and intimidate and harass him. Shri Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that he will neither be intimidated nor silenced and will vigorously defend himself in each of these cases.”
