Mahendrasinh Vaghela, two-time Congress MLA and son of former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela joined BJP on Saturday giving a jolt to Congress as he is the second leader in a fortnight to quit the party. But soon differences erupted between father and son with Shankersinh criticizing the move and said that Mahendrasinh should first consult his supporters before joining BJP.
Soon after joining BJP Mahendrasinh attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and said that with his style of working, revival of the country’s oldest party does not look possible in the near future. He was elected to the Gujarat Assembly on a Congress ticket for two consecutive terms from Bayad in North Gujarat — 2007 to 2012 and 2012 to 2017.
He had quit the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections held in December last year. However, he did not contest the elections or join any party then.
After senior MLA Kunwarji Bavaliya he is the second MLA of Congress to join the saffron party. Bavaliya was made cabinet minister soon after he quit Congress.
Meanwhile, Shankersinh told reporters that he has given a week’s time to his son to take his supporters in confidence. ‘we are in politics due to supporters and one cannot just act individually. He is free to join any party he wishes to. But first he should ask his supporters. If they agree then he should go to Kamalam with them and join the party”.
Mahendrasinh was being pressurized by his BJP friends for last three days and might be under that pressure he must have joined the party, Bapu claimed.
To a question about his joining BJP Shankersinh said that he was not part of any party. ‘I will be active during Lok Sabha elections but definitely I am not joining BJP’, he claimed.
Before the 2017 Assembly polls, Shankersinh, then a legislator, had led a rebellion in the Congress, which resulted in 13 MLAs quitting the party.
Some of them had later joined the BJP and fought the elections.
