The election for the new state BJP chief will be held on Friday. The term of the present president R C Faldu ended in April last year but he was asked to continue. Senior party leader Vijay Rupani is the front runner for the post though several other leaders are also in race.
There has been a controversy between Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and BJP President Amit Shah over new president, party insiders revealed. The party also faced a dilemma on whether to go for a Patel leader orother backward class (OBC) communities in the backdrop of agitation by the Patels to seek OBC status while counter agitation by the OBCs to protect their quota basket.
Names of cabinet ministers Bhupendrasinh Chudasma, Pradipsinh Jadeja are also doing rounds. Chudasama and Jadeja are kshatriya and are from Ahmedabad district while Rupani is a bania and from Saurashtra, largest region of Gujarat where the BJP suffered heavily in the local elections held in November 2015.
The role of the new president will be crucial as the state will go to polls next year. With Patel agitation and allegations of corruption against Anandiben Patel government piling up the party is facing a tough challenge.
