Gujarat University has suspended the head of political science department, Sarman Zala. He has been accused of writing letters rife with sexual innuendos to three woman faculty members of the school social sciences.
As the issue hit headlines in local newspapers, Zala is missing. Police says that his hpuse is locked. We have sent a legal notice to Zala and placed him under suspension, said GU vice-chancellor M N Patel.
GU has formed a four-member fact-finding committee to probe the allegations against Zala who has already been issued a show-cause notice in the matter. Though police say Zala is missing, his reply to the show-cause notice was posted from Navrangpura. He sent his reply by post to GU on Thursday. Zala claims he is innocent and is being framed.
The Zala episode has now got the GU authorities looking minutely at six sexual harassment charges filed in 2012 when Parimal Trivedi was the VC. The charges were against some faculty members, including Zala.
GU authorities are now probing whether the incidents have any similarities with the lewd letters received by the three faculty members. The university has also formed a seven-member women sexual harassment prevention cell which will act a watchdog to do justice in such incidents.
