Toll fees are stopped for now on a 28.7 km part of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stopped collecting tolls on this section of the road on Tuesday because they are fixing it.
This toll stoppage is for Package-4 of the Sanchore-Santalpur area (NH-754K), which is part of the Bharatmala project. NHAI said that the toll fees were stopped at 8 a.m. and will stay off until the road work is done, so people can travel without much trouble.
The Sanchore-Santalpur road is 125 km long and links Rajasthan to the Patan area in Gujarat. It’s an important road for business. The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is part of the Bharatmala plan, which wants to make it easier to travel between regions and get to western ports like Jamnagar, Kandla, and Mundra. This will help landlocked northern states trade more easily.
Not having to pay tolls for now helps drivers and companies that transport goods while the road is being fixed to be safer and last longer. Gujarat is known for building lots of expressways quickly and is still doing a lot to improve its roads.
A video showing how bad this part of the road was recently became very popular online.
The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, which is being built, will be over 1,300 km long and go through five states. Almost 300 km of it will be in Gujarat, linking important business areas like Patan and Jamnagar.
