The BJP in Gujarat has decided for no repeat theory in local bodies election for post of Mayor and other functionaries. This has given jitters to partymen who view this is an indication of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls also.

The parliamentary board meeting to decide on names of Mayor and other posts in municipal corporations and local bodies in the state  began on Wednesday. BJP president C R Paatil said that the party has decided to adhere to its policy of ‘no-repeat’.

He said that BJP would give chance to new and fresh members. There are about 1,500 functionaries in local bodies and the party wants to train new leaders and provide chance to more people. BJP holds 90.5% of the seats in the state’s local bodies.

“The party has initiated a process to hand over responsibility to about 1,500 leaders for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairpersons, leaders of ruling party, president, vice president, executive committee members of taluka panchayats, district panchayats, municipalities, and municipal corporations”.

Last week the party also held an exercise to seek recommendations from local leaders about the upcoming nominations. A three-member team, was sent to each local body to hear the members of the local units, including the elected representatives.

In view of recent incidents in which some leaders raised allegations against rivals within the party, Paatil said the party would “verify” accusations against any leader being considered for the top posts. “

Asked if members of committees in local bodies would be considered for higher posts such as mayor or president, Paatil said, “We will discuss the possibility whether a standing committee chairperson should be considered for a mayoral post. We will declare the names beforehand.”
